OCTOBER ENCOURAGEMENT - LIVING WORDS by Kelly Rotenberry

Hebrews 4:12 “The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

What is a home without a Bible? 'Tis a home where daily bread for the body is provided, but the soul is never fed.' Charles Miegs

A young woman was packing a suitcase for a long trip. She said to a woman who was watching her,

I’m just about finished. I only have to put in a guidebook, a lamp, a mirror, my favorite love letters, a microscope, a telescope, a volume of fine poetry, a song book, a few biographies, a package of old letters, a sword and a set of books I have been studying.” The onlooker gasped, “How do you intend to get all that in your suitcase? It’s almost full now!”

The young woman replied, “Oh, all that won’t take much room.” She then walked over to a table, picked up her Bible, placed it in the corner of her suitcase, and closed the lid. Winking at her friend, she said, “And I even got in a loaf of living bread too.”

Voltaire once said that in a hundred years the Bible would be a forgotten book, found only in museums. When the hundred years were up, however, Voltaire’s home was occupied by the Geneva Bible Society! Feed the children a healthy portion of the Bible today. Consider it heavenly food!

Proverbs 4:20-22 “Pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them.”

The Bible says of itself that it is “fresh” with every reading -- it is never stale. The Bible is always applicable to life, no matter where one lives. It cuts past excuses and defenses. The truths of the Bible are unshakable -- they will last forever and never go out of style. It is reliable, authoritative, impacting and powerful. We know all these things. Most of us have known these things about the Word of God for a long time. But, often times, we become so familiar with it and so used to having 24/7 access to it, that we forget the power contained within its pages. It is an amazing gift from God. It is the blueprint by which we live, it is the love letter that soothes our soul and lifts our spirit, it is the answer to life’s questions. As parents we are told that we are to teach the word to our children.

“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, 'Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.'” Deuteronomy 4:9-11

Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 11:18-20

This is not a request. The Lord is not suggesting that we teach our children. As moms this is the essence of our job in raising children that belong to God and whom He is trusting us to raise in His nurture and admonition. What does that mean? To nurture is to care for and encourage the growth and development of their knowledge of and relationship with the Lord. To admonish is to correct and direct with the Word of God. Give them their life instructions so that they can not just succeed in their walk with the Lord, but excel in it. Our children are our mission field and the harvest is ripe. Press on!
