Children are important to God. Look in your concordance at the number of biblical references to children and child-bearing; the entire book of Proverbs is a letter from a father to his son. Numerous passages through the Bible are directed to parents about their children and to children about their parents. So why do we so often want to throw up our hands in despair when it comes to parenting? Perhaps because we get so caught up in the crisis of the moment that we forget that God is with us, waiting for us to ask His advice, wanting to give us His help.
Developing holiness in our children begins with holiness in ourselves. Children model what they see. When they face trouble in their own lives, they will remember vividly how we handled those times. When they are faced with choices, they will instinctively know what we would choose. When they are setting priorities, they will know from experience where our priorities lie. None of us is perfect. But we are all capable of presenting an overall picture of what we really value in life…and if it is holiness, our children’s inheritance will be a rich one indeed.
