“Oh, be careful little tongue....”

by Deborah Randall

Oh, be careful little tongue, what you say,
Oh, be careful little tongue, what you say,

for the Father up above is looking down in love,
Oh, be careful little tongue, what you say......

On a family visit this summer to Iowa,
I heard a sermon that has given new light to this song for me.
In the sermon the pastor challenged us to try and go
twenty-four hours without saying anything negative about
or to another person. (Wow)! In the sermon he shared
how NOT being able to go without something for twenty-fours
usually indicates some type of dependence/even addiction.
As I pondered this and decided to try the challenge,
I learned afresh how careful I needed to be with my tongue!

As a new year of learning has kicked off in our home, one of the areas
I've been praying about for our family is this area of encouragement
versus discouragement via the spoken word. The Bible has much to say
about the power of the tongue – how it can bring life or death (Proverbs 18:21).
I desire to be sharing life – even life abundantly with my family and those God
brings into contact with us (John 10:10).
What areas has God challenged you
and your family to be about this year? Stretch out in faith and take up the challenge –
you will grow closer and abide more in Him in doing so!
